Now you know what reverse culture shock is and how to identify it. This section introduces three steps to deal with reverse culture shock.

Reverse culture shock is a psychological process of getting reacquainted to your surroundings, just as normal culture shock. You’ve done it in the beginning of your study abroad adventure, and now you have to do it again, readjusting to your old home.

Even though research shows that reverse culture shock can be unpleasant, it can also be very insightful as it teaches you about your new habits, your new perspectives, and it helps you understand how you have grown and changed during your time abroad. It can even inspire you to rewrite your resume with the skills you’ve gained while being abroad!

Most universities advise their students to do the following to deal with reverse culture shock by communicating about their experience.

Be patient: familiarize yourself with the symptoms and be prepared for the possibility of an adjustment period. Give yourself time to readjust.
Communicate: Talk to others about your experiences and the direction you want your life to go. What was it like? What will you do different now that you are back home? What is your next step?
Keep connected: Find a way to stay involved in the international student community. Start by inquiring at universities or civic organizations what options you have to share your experiences with others.
