Below you will find more information on how to overcome culture shock by building up your cultural intelligence. This section should take you about 30 minutes to complete.

Develop your Cultural Intelligence: Strategy and Action

In Module 3: Culture Awareness you learned that developing Cultural Intelligence (CQ) takes four aspects. In order to develop CQ and deal with intercultural situations well you need to:

know how similar and different rules are across cultures (3.2. Increasing your cultural knowledge & 3.3. Increasing your knowledge about languages),
have the energy and confidence to persevere through challenging cultural experiences (3.4. Assessing your drive to engage with culture),
be able to strategize and adjust ways to adjust to new cultures (3.5. Strategizing And Planning Your Cultural Journey) and
have the flexibility to adjust behaviours according to what is appropriate (3.6. Taking Action And Practicing Adapting Your Behaviour).

In the Module about Cultural Awareness you already worked on increasing your cultural knowledge and assessed your drive to deal with cultural difference. In this section you will learn to strategize, plan and take action. Take this moment to go back to Module 3 and reflect on the theory and the answers you gave to the exercise back then. If you have not completed Module 3 yet, go do so now! This will help you better understand the context of the next exercises.
