This section will help you to think about the pros and cons of various accommodation types while you are abroad.

University accommodation vs. Private accommodation

Have you already considered whether you would prefer to live in University Accommodation or Private Accommodation?

University Accommodation

Some but not all host universities offer university housing. Your host university should let you know whether they offer housing and if so, how you can apply and what the application deadlines are. In very select cases you are required to make use of university accommodation, if this is the case it will be clearly stated by your host university. In any other case, whether you choose to stay in university accommodation is up to you. Some students prefer it because it is often easier and cheaper than finding private accommodation.

Keep in mind:

  • Apply as early as possible! University accommodation is often oversubscribed. Early application will ensure a higher probability of getting appointed university accommodation.
  • Make sure to meet the accommodation application deadline at your host university.

Private Accommodation

If you are looking for private accommodation, keep the following in mind:

  • Seek advice from the housing office at your host university. They will be able to advise you on useful local accommodation agencies or websites.
  • Take the usual precautions when searching for accommodation, such as:
    • Do not visit potential lodgings alone.
    • Do not advertise your phone number in public places.
    • Do not sign any contract that has a long notice period.
    • Do not sign any contract that does not include any notice period.
